In looking at the build.sh file for the rpm/deb creating - for Redhat style systems it is using the logstash.sysv init script.
There is an alternative logstash.sysv.redhat version as well, that is not used.
As it turns out the logstash.sysv init script does not work on el5.
Not sure on the direction LS should take.
