I can't reproduce this with 1.1.beta8 (see http://bit.ly/rvtXIr). There's been a lot of hacking on the GELF output, and I think it's generally in much better shape now in 1.1.

I'm forwarding Java (log4j) log messages sent to logstash, via GELF to graylog2 as my backend data store. I originally left the chunksize as default (did not specify in the logstash config file), and large (multi-chunk) messages resulted in error messages in graylog2 stating that a gelf chunk was null.
Reading the docs for graylog2, it stated that it's default chunksize was 8192. I set that size in the logstash config file, and no longer receive those errors from graylog2.
